Does Venice really need a description?
The world famous canals, the gondolas, amazing architecture, the tight intimate streets and alleys, the people, the food, the atmosphere, I’ll stop there.
I love it because photographically as a destination it is just heavenly to me but at this time of year we can elevate our love for Venice because of the colourful and extravagant spectacle that is “The Carnival” which makes Venice even more of a photographers paradise with individuals, couples dressed in the most flamboyant and elaborate finery with masks completing the masquerade and mystery, I did also see some dogs dressed up too, the best bit is that after all the effort these people have gone to most of them “hope and expect” to be photographed, this is the icing on the cake.
The festival brings out people in their hundreds dressed up in a vast variety of outfits ball gowns…..
The Carnival is very old and is celebrating the transition from winter to spring. The start of the Carnival in Venice dates back to 1296. At that time Venice was a republic, and a city member established a feast to celebrate the beginning of the spring. During the reign of Napoleon, the Carnival stopped. After a break of almost two centuries, the tradition of the carnival is reinvented. Set by commerce to create a peak in the low season regarding tourism.
Since 1980, the Carnival takes place every year and is a true spectacle, the end of the event marks the beginning of Lent 40 days before Easter.
Our accommodation will be where I have stayed 3 times before, rooms are glorious en suite double rooms near Treviso & travel from there to Venice by car or train, the reason for this is that staying in Venice itself is “premium price” at Carnival time.
